A Brief History of Yoga
A Brief History of Yoga. Yoga began in India 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. The word yoga comes from Sanskrit and means, to join or integrate, or just unification. Yoga began, as far as we know, as part of the Indian philosophical system, but not everyone practices yoga, and it never became a religion.
A Brief History of Yoga |
About 5 million people in the United States do yoga. Dance classes and stretching exercises usually have parts and pieces that come directly from yoga. If you have ever gone to a physical therapist, he may give you therapeutic training which is a yoga posture.
There are several types of yoga. Yoga that you might watch on TV or taught at local Y or adult education classes is called hatha yoga, or physical yoga. Sometimes it's known as yoga for health. You can also find yoga taught in hospitals or medical treatment centers. Many health professionals today feel yoga can be part of the treatment plan.
Hatha yoga has three parts: a series of exercises or movements called asanas (poses or postures in English), breathing techniques of all types, and relaxation.
