High School Health Insurance Plan

When you finally finish with your high school education, there is no doubt that you will enroll in college. Many times when a child reaches the age of 20, they are no longer protected by their parents' insurance and this can cause a disturbing situation if they do not work and only go to college. However, many universities offer health insurance plans. Whether one of these insurance plans is right for you or does not require a lot of consideration.

The benefits of college health insurance will vary from campus to campus. Even though many people think that they are free, this is not true. Although there are usually no fees for office visits and routine checks, students must pay for lab work and other types of specialist visits. Benefits will usually pay in full for only closed service types at campus health centers. If you have to see an outside doctor, the coverage of students can go down to 70% and risk paying a high deduction fee.

If you have a pre-existing condition, then you might have a problem getting treatment at a campus health center. Having an existing illness or disability does not mean that you will be disqualified to get a campus health insurance plan, but you may not be able to get treatment for a pre-existing disease. This can cause a number of problems if new problems arise and are products of pre-existing diseases.

All plans are different, so make sure you know everything you can about your college plan. Be sure to check whether you or your child will be covered during summer holidays when students do not take classes. This is important because you do not want to experience an accident and know that insurance becomes inactive when they are not in class. Many colleges have coverage during summer holidays, but some don't.

Make sure you understand the plan. Are they HMOs, or can members use whatever provider they want? This is equally important because you want to know where you can go in an emergency, and there is nothing worse than finding out after the fact that you will be trapped by paying the full amount for a medical bill.

There is no definite answer whether you must or should not commit to getting college health insurance. Make sure that you fully understand your plan so that no problems can arise in an emergency. Even though it's not free insurance, it will definitely save you money in the event of an accident or illness.
